I have long held a more than passing interest in the Tiny House movement. I am drawn to smaller spaces, and using them to the best possible solution. I am committed to building "green" with recycled materials - both for the good it does the planet, but also I am drawn to the aesthetic quality of it as well. All that being said. I know myself well enough to say I (along with my cat) cannot live in '125 square feet such as a Jamaica Cottage shop THOW (tiny house on wheels): I don't say it to knock the THOW movement - it's just that for me - it's too small. The median size of a new single-family house was 2,467 square feet in 2016 - Wall Street JournalOn the other end of the spectrum - 2,500+ feet is way too big for me and the cat. Too big for most families of 3 or 4 i think as well. I keep hearing "you need 3 bedrooms for good resale" or "you need to put in a full septic system for resale" and "don't build a personal house - you'll never sell it down the road"
What if those aren't priorities to me? What if i don't want to buy an existing house that's crappy on the side of a major state road? - To me, if I am going to continue to live in Vermont - I want and need to do as I see fit, as my needs require. This space I build will ever only be two things 1.) my permanent year round residence - or 2.) should I have to move away from Vermont, it will become a 2nd home to return to as to recharge my batteries. I want to reject all the "shoulds, have toos" etc. I fully reject people thinking that they are right and know better than I about my own needs/wants. I want to be mortgage free. I want to live in a space of my own design. I want neighbors, but not right on top of me. I do not want shared walls, ceilings, floors and so on. I want space. peace. nature.
